This has been a weird winter. We had our first real snow on Saturday. I made the mistake of running with Laura. I got crushed.

Laura is 9 miles ahead of me, she had to run back to find me.

That run hurt, I never want to run with Laura again... damn her being way faster than me.

Sunday we headed down to the Ohiopyle expecting a ton of snow, they had an ice storm and it packed all of the snow down. It was sunny so no complaints!

I already posted a review on Bar Mitts back in December. These things are amazing. This past weekend the temps were in the teens when I started riding. My hands were super warm. I actually had someone stop me on the trail and ask where to buy them.

Review: SmartWool Midweight Zip

I am a big fan of SmartWool, I have been wearing the hell out of their TML Jacket. I recently picked up one of their Midweight (250 g/m^2) layers.

One of the nice things about a wool layer over synthetics is that they do not hold odors, ok synthetics stink like a gym sock after they have been worn enough times. I end up throwing out "Tech T's" that won't ever loose their stink. Another nice bit about wool is that it really does keep you warmer when wet then synthetics.

The SmartWool Midweight Zip T is perfect for hiking or riding. The zip is easy to use while riding, perfect for regulating heat on those long uphills.

And as someone who has tried many different brands of wool layers, why I stick with SmartWool is that it does not shrink when washed. I have been BURNED so many times by other brands. Why spend good money on a layer that you are going to get sweaty and you will be afraid to wash? No worries with SmartWool. Pick one up if you need a midweight layer, perfect for days in the 40-60°F or under another layer for colder days.

Taking Advantage of the Weather

We had a warm weekend and I had no idea what the snow in the mountains would be like. So I took my mountain bike down to Ohiopyle, PA.

I decided on a variation of a ride I did a few times this summer. The GAP trail was snowy in spots.

But when you'd hit the sun it was great.

Is it wrong that my snack bars are endorsed by a jonas brother?

Then my start up Ramcat.

Firetower road is a climb....

Then the view from the top.

At the summit, I jumped on the the dry XC ski trails.

Then dropped down in to town on the Sugarloaf trail.

And a reward at the end of a Tofu Bean Burrito from Over the Falls Pub. I would have taken a picture, but I destroyed that burrito...

And just cause I am not often there at sunset...

Review: Pentax Optop WG-1

The Pentax Optio WG-1 is a cool waterproof camera from Pentax. It is not only good for underwater use, but also rugged and perfect for taking riding, hiking or running. It is shockproof, coldproof, crush proof, and waterproof. No need to be afraid of it breaking while outdoors

The camera has a nice large 2.7" LCD Display on the back.

One especially amazing thing about this camera is the Macro.

It also has a microscope mode, which focuses extremely close and illuminates the subject with LED's built in to the front of the camera.


Screw on sunglasses hinge.

In good light the pics are awesome.

It shoots 720p HD Video.

It has a built in GPS to tag photos or track your adventure. I am really a big fan of the waterproof remote control that is available for the Optio WG-1.

With the carabiner strap, it is easy to grab with gloves on. The buttons are also easy to use with gloves on.

Bottom line, it is a really nice camera for in use in the outdoors. But if you are in a place without bright sunlight it takes a steady hand. Here in SW PA the foliage in the woods is so thick it is not very bright under the canopy. So I would have to hold the camera very steady. But whenever I am at the beach this is the camera I grab.

Review: PocketToolX Piranha Multi Tool

The PocketToolX Piranha Multi Tool is an ingenious little device that you will end up carrying with you everywhere.

It is a small, light and incredibly useful little widget. It has a built in pry bar, scraper, screw drivers, open end wrenches, box wrenches, bottle opener, and a box opener. It is constructed of stainless steel with a high polished finish.

The Piranha is so useful you will carry it with you all the time. I find myself foregoing grabbing a screwdriver or the "proper" tool when I have this because it does so many things so well.

Really this thing is cool, I see they make it in titanium now too. I have their Mako bike tool, which is great as well. If you are looking for a handy little pocket tool and don't want to carry a huge leatherman style multi tool, the PocketToolX Piranha is just what you are looking for.

Tip: Cold Feet During Winter Riding

So after 20 years of riding in the winter I think I can finally say I know how to keep my feet warm while riding in the cold.

First thing first, if you ride with clipless pedals buy a pair of winter riding boots. You can spend tons of money on shoe covers, but they won't work as well and it will just annoy you that you spent $150 on assos shoe covers that fall off and leave your feet cold. I use Shimano MW-02 winter shoes.

Next I will throw on a shoe cover if it is below 15°F out, I like Sidetrak booties, but they are no longer being made.

To keep your feet warm on the ride, you need to start with two things; warm feet and warm shoes. If I am driving I keep my shoes up in the front seat footwell so they start off warm. If I am at home I leave them in front of the heat vent. Why waste foot warmth warming up the shoe with your foot?

But then you need to start with warm feet, this might seem ridiculous and it probably is, but it works for me.... While getting suited in my space man riding costume I wear down booties from Sierra Designs.

This is what works for me, hopefully it'll help you out too.

Review: Bar Mitts

I wanted to try Bar Mitts for years, but for some reason never picked up a pair. Over the summer I saw them on sale at Wilderness Voyageurs(apparently June is not a hot time for winter bike accessories). I picked up a pair and have used them for the last month since it started getting cold. I am kicking myself for not getting them earlier.

I have cold hands, that's an understatement. I have been using a mix of mountaineering gloves for years on the bike. My favorite being OR Endeavor Mittens with OR PL 400 Fleece Mittens beneath, which I use hiking and snow shoeing, etc. But that is a big glove to use on a bike. It looks like I am ready to go boxing not ride a bike.

Bar Mitts are neoprene covers that fit over your handle bar. They go on in just a few minutes and stay put really well. They attach on the outside with a zipper and velcro loop. On the inside, there is one loop going over the end of the bar.

Bar Mitts for the mountain bike come in a few different versions, there is the standard model(which I use), a model designed to work with bar ends and another model for Ergon grip riders. The first time you use bar mitts, it is slightly unnerving. But 5 minutes in to the ride you totally forget about it and all you can think about is how happy you are riding with warm hands in the winter.

It is a bit of a tight fit, but that keeps your hands warm; really warm. I wear them with a thin fleece mitten and my hands are not the slightest bit cold even on long rides.

If you ride in the cold, buy them. They will keep your hands warmer than anything else you can use. I will be picking up a pair for my CX bike.

Review: Giottos Compact Tripod with Ball head (QU305B-1004)

I like to pretend I am a photographer, the key word there is pretend. One of the few things I remember from my darkroom days is "if you want a good picture bring a tripod". But who wants to carry and set up a full size tripod? I used to try and do that with a full size lightweight tripod, but that did not work out very well... I always left it at home. The Giottos Compact Tripod with Ball head (QU305B-1004) is a great solution for a tripod you can carry with you riding and hiking.

I had been using an Ultrapod, but it was a bit limiting in that it was so low to the ground. I saw on Outdoor Photographer a list of Mini Tripods and well, that lead to me buying the Giottos Compact Tripod with Ball Head . Which is a much more substantial and significantly better tripod than the old Ultrapod.

It is a bit bigger collapsed than the ultrapod.

The Giottos Compact Tripod is able to be raised much higher than the ultrapod as well.

The ballhead is sturdy and easy to adjust, even with gloves on. I have used it with my DSLR, but mostly I carry a pocket camera and it is very steady.

GeoManGear Magicshine Battery Replacements arrived.

GeoManGear has send me my replacement battery packs for the Magicshine 900 Plus lights that I purchased last year. There was a recall on the old battery packs that was caused by faulty components in the old battery packs. GeoManGear has stepped up his game and is selling new US made packs that are much nicer than the old ones.

Plus after using my old NiteRider Enduro Lithium the Magicshine was much missed. That GeoManGear light is so bright. I might pick up the 1600 Lumen model.

Review: Topeak Mini DXG Pump

The Mini Pump... as cyclists we give these things such a bad rap. Partly because so many of them are crap and partly because you only use them when you have flat, so you are already in a bad mood.

But I have had my Topeak Mini DXG for a few years now and think it is the best pump out there. I have used it to pump road, mountain and cross tubes without a problem.

It features Topeak's SmartHead which works on either Schrader or Presta valves without any adjustment.

One really nice feature is the built in gauge which lets you know if you have done the minimum amount of pumping you can to not get a pinch flat on the rest of the ride.

It has a stout handle and pump head with textured grips.

Part of the reason you can pump a tube up so fast is that it works on the in and out stroke.

I have hated or broken every pump i had before this one. I have had this one now going on 3 years so that says something! Pick one up for your camelback.

Review: Patagonia Down Sweater Vest

I picked this vest up a year ago and wanted to do a post on it because... I'm kinda smitten with it.

Its the perfect layer for when you don't know what the day will bring. It is 800 fill down stuffed in a lightweight nylon shell. It packs down in to a built in pocket to a ball about the size of a grapefruit.

The inner pocket is also really useful for keeping your iPhone and camera warm, which keeps the batteries from going dead in the cold temps.

I carry this vest with me on all my winter hikes, it is warm enough to wear on long cold downhills or while you are warming up in the beginning of your hike. Plus you can throw a shell over it to keep even warmer. Because of how thin the vest is you won't feel or look like the stay-puff marshmellow man.

It packs so small I also bring it with me when I travel, just in case. It also looks nice and is comfortable too, so you'll wear it off the trail as well.

Review: Park Tool GP-2 Glueless Patch Kit

I have been using Park Tool's Glueless Patch Kit for the past 16 years. They have not let me down. Each pack contains 6 patches and a small piece of sand paper. They are very handy to keep in your pack, just in case you blow through that one tube you carry or when you end up helping out your riding buddy- the one who never carries a tube.

Just on my last ride I had a piece of metal puncture my tube and the tire. Now I knew if I pumped the tube back up, it would just pop again as the it worked itself through the tire.

I applied a patch on the inside of the tire.

Then I scuffed the tube and applied a patch to it as well.

I have had these patches on tubes for months and months at a time with no leaking. If you carry a pump and a tube you might as well carry a pack of Park GP-2 Glueless Patches. They only take up as much space as two stacked quarters.

We worked with 3M to produce a self adhesive tube patch that stretches, flexes, twists, and turns right along with the tube. No messy glue, no bulky packaging. Updated Review: Osprey Raptor 10

I have had this Osprey Raptor 10 for over a year now and I wanted to update the review I originally posted.

This pack is full of features, it is really well designed, and extremely tough. The fit is fantastic, it does not move around, even on the toughest singletrack.

What is common in all these pics? I am riding with the Osprey Raptor 10.

This is the best mountain bike hydration pack I have ever used. I mean seriously, I have a bag thing, and I was always searching for just the right pack. Who's not looking for any new hydration packs? Me.

Rudy Project Rydon Update

I bought these Rudy Project Rydon glasses in 2008. And since they cost so much, I keep trying to like them.

But if there is any trace of humidity in the air, they fog up so badly you can't see out of them at all.

Pluses:

Photocromic - they react quickly to changing light conditions.
Tough - they have lasted three years
Light

Minuses:

They fog up very easily.

So if you live in a dry place (I'm looking at you Colorado) these would be great.

Review: Continental Mountain King 29er Tire

The trails have gotten muddy, the super fast rolling Kenda Small Block 8 tires have not been cutting it on the muddy roots. I heard nothing but good things about the Mountain Kings from Continental so I gave them a try.

The tire has super large aggressive knobs.

The knobs will squirm if you are running higher pressure. I backed off to 30psi front/rear and it went away.

I am running a 2.4 in the front and a 2.2 in the rear

I am very happy with them. I have ridden them in sloppy mud and leaf covered singletrack and liked them on both. I was actually amazed how well they worked on the rocks this past weekend.

Continental Says: **Note this is not my mtn king... new one is out now, I guess?

The Mountain King has been completely overhauled for 2011. Those who desire a bit more meat for particularly difficult sections choose the Mountain King in 2.4. Improving on what was excellent soft/loose grip, and now delivering much better all-around performance.
By beefing-up the shoulder lugs, and creating more void toward the center lugs – corning has become telepathic.

Review: Seiko Automatic Dive Watch SNZF19

SNZF19 Seiko Auto on Maratac Strap

I was riding the spin bike before work this past winter wearing my Polar RS101 heart rate monitor and I noticed just how haggard this watch looked. I have been using it now for 8 years, it does it HRM job well. But there is no chance I can wear it in the office. It is totally devoid of style.

I started my google-quest for a new HRM and that lead me to decide I really don't need a heart rate monitor, just a stop watch. Since I run at lunch I wanted a nice looking watch I could also wear to the office.

Everyone raves about the Seiko Automatic watches as a great "tool" watch. And that seemed like a good solution to my watch conundrum. So I picked up an SNZF109 from amazon.com. It came with a stainless band. Which I must admit looked great, not so sporty. But the band had so much play in the links it sounded like I had bells on every time I moved my wrist.

I replaced the stainless band with a nylon Maratac Zulu strap. The watch looked great, I wore it at the gym, mountain biking, running and at the beach.

But the Seiko SNZF19 has some drawbacks which lead me ultimately to sell it. The auto movement has a bit of play in it, if you shake your wrist with it on, you can hear it knocking around. The day of week is available in two languages, so you have to set it right so it displays in your language most of the day. Not a big deal but when you take in to account the following problem it gets annoying.

The problem is the "reserve" of the auto is not very robust. So if you don't wear the watch for half a day the time, date and day of week are off. I know you can buy a winder, but the winder would cost as much as the watch.

After selling this watch I ended up getting a Reactor Trident Titanium Watch and have been really psyched on that. I can't say I don't miss the Seiko, it looked cool and the auto was intriguing. If I were to buy that watch again I would instead get the "Orange Monster".

But that Reactor Trident is just so nice, I won't get another watch any time soon.

Rain Gear

October came in like a Lion (can you use that for rain? whatever I am). It has been raining here since Friday. Having all the right gear makes all the difference. In this case I was wearing Showers Pass Club Shoe Covers , Showers Pass Club Convertible Pants, Showers Pass Elite 2.0 Jacket. Add some fenders on to my cross bike and it was a good weekend for riding double track.

Review: Prestalever

The Prestalever is a new tire lever from the folks who make the Prestaflator. The lever is sturdier than than your average plastic tire lever and has a unique design where the lever hooks on to the tire and the rim.

When on the rim it is easy to remove even stubborn tires because of the slick design. When seating tires on the rim, the lip of the tire lever stays on the outside of the tire and you simply slide it around the outside of the tire and rim.

The Prestalever's unique design makes installation and removal of tires really easy and quick. The lever is sturdy enough that it does not bend, which is handy on those P.I.T.A. tires.

After the QuikStik changed design to a flimsier model I have been on the lookout for a replacement sturdy tire lever. The Prestalever is my new go to tire lever, I have one in my shop and in my camelback.

Review: Ruff Wear Singletrak Pack

We bring Zeus with us pretty much everywhere. In the summer when it is hot we have been trying to plan our hikes around water. He likes to swim. But we tried some new trails and had to bring water for him.

Zeus loves his Ruff Wear Approach Pack so when I saw Ruff Wear makes a small pack for dogs that holds two Platypus bladders, room for some treats and is light weight I had to check it out. It is perfect for a day hike with your pup.

The Singletrak pack has two pockets on the top that are large enough to hold the included Platypus bladders on each side. Not to mention the leash loop and the handle.

And on the outside of the pockets there is a smaller pocket to hold treats while on your adventure.

The bladders are 0.5L each, with an easy to open top.

Zeus is used to drinking out of bottles, so with this, we just pour water out in to our hands.

The pack is padded but not too thick, and the straps are the right size with contoured buckles. Zeus did not even notice he had a pack on. It is easy to adjust and set up, it did not move around on Zeus.

I really like this pack since I end up giving Zeus more water when he wears it. Usually I give him water out of a bottle I keep for him in my pack, which I also take out his bowl and well, he doesn't drink that much. So I started giving him water out of my hydration pack, but sometimes I can't get the water to stream out. With the Ruff Wear Singletrak pack on, I just grab the Platypus bladder and pour some in to my hand. It is tough and light. If you have an active pup who doesn't mind sporting a packs check this out.

Review: Boeshield T9 Bike Lube

I have been using White Lightning for the last... ever, I don't know, more than a decade. But our sewing machine included a can of Boeshield T9 for lubricating the moving parts on it. It worked so well I picked up some Boeshield T9 to try on my bike.

I have to say I am really impressed. It lasts longer than and is more water resistant than White Lightning. The only downside is it leaves the chain slightly (and I mean slightly) more greasy than White Lightning.

I have switched brands after a 15 year run, so that has to say something.

Review: Knipex Cable Cutters (95 61 190 Wire Rope Cutters)

If you spend time working on your bike, you have to cut cables and there is nothing worse than spending time cutting now housing and cables to find tons of drag on the finished product because you cutters crushed the housing while cutting it.

I tried the Park Tool Cable Cutter, and right out of the box they worked great. But after a few months of casual home use they were dull. I guess the metal used in not that great. Anyhow before the Park Tool I used Knipex High Leverage Diagonal Cutters. They worked well, but not as nice as the Park's when new.

I picked up a pair Knipex Wire Rope Cutters (95 61 190) and they are very nice. They cut housing without crimping and cleanly cut cable with no effort at all. They are spring loaded to pop open.

There is of course a latch to keep them closed when not in use.

Adventure Ride!

The weather report was good (highs in the 90s!) and no rain. I headed to Ohiopyle for an adventure ride on my cyclocross bike.

Leaving from town you get an easy 10 mile warm up on the Great Allegheny Passage.

Then you can spin around the town of Confluence and pick up a clif bar at the Confluence Bike Shop. then head back towards O'pyle. Then turn off at Ram Cat Road. You'll head up hill on gravel for a bit.

When you encounter your first left, go up Fire Tower rd. The sign is missing, but its the first left. And this is where the ride gets rough. What with all the rain and the increased logging activity the road is rough. I found myself riding the hump between ruts. In Boulder they would call this mountain biking and kids would be on FS bikes.

After climbing for a while.

Its begining to take its toll on me.

It just keeps going up...

And Then a fork in the road. Funny thing is, last time I rode this, the turn to the right was like a 4 foot wide trail. now its been logged and is 20 feet wide.

As a result the road gets a little messed up the higher you go, which is good since you are tired then and can use it as a reason to take a break. "Oh yeah I lost traction on that..."

And the TOP! 1800' gained in 4 miles.

And a paved descent back to the car.

The route more or less, miles can be added...

I want to try this again, and turn on the dirt road that crosses the Sugarloaf trail, I think it is called Grover rd. Take that to Dinner Bell rd. and back to town.

Review: Wheels Manufacturing Hanger Multi Tool.

If you go on rides more than a mile from the trail head this tool is a must have. The Wheels Manufacting Hanger Multi Tool, looks like a normal multi tool, but it hides a spare emergency derailleur hanger.

It packs the following tools in a super tiny American made package:

6,5,4,3,2.5,2mm Hex keys
Phillips, Flat
T25 Torx

Hanging off the side, attached by a knurled/machined knob is a derailleur hanger.

The hanger slips over your skewer and allows you to reattach a rear derailleur and ride out.

How you use it is pretty ingenious. First you unscrew the nut from the quick release.

Next you slip the hanger over the QR and reattach the nut.

Attach the derailleur and you can ride back out to the trail head.

Really whether or not you ride with gears or your carry an extra hanger for your frame this thing can save your ride. You know your buddy who never brings tools, or maintains their own bike? You have driven a few hours to some epic singletrack and they with will snap their derailleur off when you are as far from the car as possible. Since you are carrying this you'll be able to hook them back up, get riding and not have to walk out of the woods.

Review: Prestaratchet PRO Bicycle Tool Kit

The Prestaratchet is a new tool from the folks who make the Prestaflator. It is a ratchet made specifically for working on bike bits. It is a smaller ratchet with a set of bits for most bike applications.

It includes torx, allen, phillips, 1/4" socket adapter, long allen ball heads, long torx bits and an extension for any 1/4" hex bit.

The bits are clearly higher quality than you normally find in the multi-tools in the big box stores. And the extended length comes in very handy, especially when adjusting that inner pad on BB7s.

The handle has a nice shape, with a cushion for your palm. The ratchet is the right size for almost anything on the bike. Sure you can buy adapters for use with a regular ratchet, but they are only commonly available in 3/8" and with that larger size they don't actually ratchet until you are almost all the way tightened up on common bike parts. With the Prestaratchet the tension is right for working with bike pressures, like those on brakes and stems, etc...

It switches direction with a nice metal lever.

The 8mm adapter is great for switching out pedals.

And the kit includes a 1/4" hex to 1/4" socket adapter. This way you can use the PrestaRatchet with your 1/4" sockets. like on the odd 11mm socket needed when rebuilding BB7s.

I used the PrestaRatchet and bits on the entire BB7 rebuild, it made is so much easier.

The bits are much nicer than what comes with the effetto mariposa guistaforza torque wrench. And the extension comes in especially handy when using the torque wrench.

Bottom Line:

This tool is very handy and a joy to use. The higher quality of the S2 hardened steel used in the bits keeps them from rounding off and keeps your parts from stripping out. The size of the kit is so small I throw it in my bag every time I drive to the trail head. Definitely pick one up if you like working on your bike.

Review: Avid BB7 Mechanical Disc Brakes

The only bad thing that came on the Cannondale Trail SL 3 29er is the brakes and levers. They came with bottom of the barrel junk brakes and levers. Which is not a big deal, the bike is still a bargain at its MSRP of $800. But lets get to those cheap brakes...

Since I have had Avid BB7s on my full suspension bike, my wife's FS bike and my CX bike you can guess which brakes I bought for the Cannondale.

Just by adding BB7s mechanical disc brakes and Avid Speed Dial levers it brought the bike to a whole new level.

The BB7 has adjusters on both the inside and outside of the caliper which makes adjustments super easy. The inside pad does not move(single piston). When you first install the BB7s you adjust the inner pad so it is as close as possible to the disc.

The outer pad is adjustable by a knob on the lever of the caliper.

These brakes are very low maintenance, but if you do need to rebuild them Avid provides a PDF with step by step instructions. And you don't need any special tools.

I have been running these brakes now for years and LOVE them. I have tried Hayes and Shimano hydraulic brakes, and they are nice too. But these BB7s take the prize for serviceability, price and quality. Hell the BB7 can be found online for $50/each and a pair of Speed Dial levers are $20. For $120 you can have top of the line cable discs and levers, not too many other things in cycling where that is the case.

Review: Reactor Trident Titanium Watch

I have been wearing this Reactor Trident Titanium watch non stop lately. I really mean all the time; mountain biking, trail running, at the gym and at the office. It is without a doubt the nicest watch I have ever worn. I have owned more expensive watches, but none nicer.

What is great about this watch is that it is solid as a rock but so light on your wrist you don't notice it. I have had some Seiko Automatic dive watches that look nice, but they weigh a ton, the movements are noisy, they jingle, bounce around and sit funny on your wrist. The Reactor Trident Titanium Never Dark is as light as it is because of its 100% titanium construction.

For me the Reactor Trident is the prefect size at 40mm. The band has a burly rubber strap, but because of the articulated link and the quality of the rubber it is super comfortable.

The Trident has a feature you only find on watches at that cost 6 times as much; screw bars for the band instead of the more common spring bars. This is a much more secure way to connect the band to the watch. Beyond the increased security it allows you to change bands without scratching the underside of the watch with a spring bar tool, which lets be honest you always do.

The band shows more of Reactor's attention to detail. The keeper loop has a hole in it where a metal reactor logo fits in keeping the band from loosening up.

The Never Dark part of the Trident name describes their 2 tier approach to dial illumination. Basically they use Superluminova glow in the dark numbers coupled with tritium tubes of always glowing colors on the hands and 3/6/9/12. You'll never wonder what the time is.

I use the rotating bezel to time my runs and rides. The bezel has a solid click and is easy to read. Another nice touch is that the numbers on the bezel are raised and polished. So many other watches have stickers or painted on numbers. The side notches on the bezel are rounded, which keeps the watch from getting caught on your shirt or jacket. I've had this happen on other divers and it's a pain.

It displays the day of the week and the day of the month at the 3 o'clock position. The font is the right size making it easy to read without a magnifying glass like some other watches.

The Trident is waterproof to 200 Meters, and to help with that the caseback is made of solid forged Ti as well. The Reactor Trident has a screw down crown, which if you forget to screw it down is still waterproof to 100 Meters.

Bottom Line
This is the perfect watch for anyone who is active. It is an awesome watch that you can not only wear out in the back country but also on your run before work and in the office. It looks great and exudes quality. The fit and finish make it incredibly comfortable. I wear it on all my mountain bike rides, trail runs, and everything else.

You'll be psyched on this watch, and with the bullet proof construction you will have it forever. I like this watch so much I am going to buy the matching titanium band for it for when I want it to look more formal.

Review: Crank Brothers M19 Multi Tool

The Crank Brothers Multi Tool is a tough aluminum and steel multi tool. It has 19 tools including allen keys, torx, screw drivers, and most importantly a chain tool.

The chain tool has a a knurled grip which is essentially when dealing with a greasy chain. But that knurled grip hides size 0-4 spoke keys and an 8/10 wrench.

I don't know why you would carry a multi tool without a chain tool. Cause a broken chain far from the car can mean a long walk home! Not that I've taken that walk...

Another nice feature is an included 8mm allen key. Which works for your pedals and chain ring bolts.

The side of the tool has a knurled grip worked in to it to prevent slipping.

And the Crank Brothers M19 includes a little aluminum sleeve to carry it in.

If you are looking for a multi tool for your bike this one has a ton of features and is made really well.

After a year of hiking and trail running in my North Face Hedgehog GTX XCR shoes I needed a new pair of trail runners. I have been spending some more time trail running lately.

So of course I bought another pair of North Face Hedgehog GTX XCR III shoes. They improved the one weak point of my previous pair. They replaced the piece of elastic cord on the heal with webbing, it had started to get a bit worn out on my old pair, but it never failed.

Review: Keen Owyhee Sandal

I bought my first pair of Keen Newport sandals when they first came on the market back in 2003. The moment I put them on I new my search for the perfect sport sandal was over. The newports have a wide toe box perfect for my boat like feet, excellent traction for hiking the trails and also walking over slick wet rocks and they are the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. After eight years of wearing my Keen Newports I figured it was time to upgrade. For someone who wears through shoes very quickly I'm absolutely amazed at how these sandals have held up. Aside from the tread on the sole being totally bare the footbed, straps and overall condition are still great.

When I first bought my keens I never intended to hike as much as I do in them, I bought them for light hikes, kicking around town an overall summertime shoe. With these hot summer days I do all my long and short hikes in my Newport's so I thought it was time for an upgrade. I decided to go for the Keen Owyhee sandal. So far I absolutely love them!!

The Owyhee's are a little different from the newport's I bought eight years ago. They have the same general strap construction but are considerably lighter than my old pair. They also have heel support instead of just a single strap which has been nice on my longer hikes feels more like a hiking shoe.

They also have nice traction I'm not sliding down hills anymore, they've been great on the trail and wet rocks.

Bottom line is I'm extremely happy with my new Keen Owyhee sandals they are great on the trails, comfortable, and also pretty stylish. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for an alternative to light hikers in the summer.

Review: Prestaflator

The Prestaflator is a really neat addition to your home bike shop. It is an attachment for an air compressor for use on bike (and even car) tires.

It uses a Silca pump style pump head, that threads on to the handle. And there is an available schraeder style head too.

The gauge is easy to read and has a large rubber bumper around it, to keep from cracking the glass if you happen to drop it.

It is rated up to 150psi.

When inflating presta tubes just keep in mind you can put pressure in, but you cannot use it to bleed pressure out. There is a pressure release valve on the handle that is used for release air from the Prestaflator, not the tube.

It is great for use when you are swapping out tires, or putting on tubeless tires. I don't use it every day, but I have had it for almost 2 years and it has grown on me. I check the gauge against an external gauge I have and it is spot on.

The only drawback is that you have to turn on your compressor, I have a little Husky Air Scout that I use it with. That thing is LOUD, so I rarely power it up to just top off my mountain bike tires. But when I am changing a flat or swapping out my studded mountain bike tire it is nice. For $39 it sure makes your air compressor more useful, since I only used it on my car tires before. For a well made tool like this that is an amazing deal.

The outdoors are more fun with your four legged friend. My boy Zeus goes on our backpacking trips and he has to carry his own weight. All the dog accessories we have purchased from Ruff Wear have been really durable, so we picked up a Ruff Wear Approach Pack for him.

He carries his food and two Nalgenes. I put his food in indvidual zip lock bags separated by the cup. This way you can keep the pack balanced easier.

It is really heavily constructed and has padding in all the right places. The main section of the pack that goes over your dogs back is covered in nylon and padded. Zeus has never had a hot spot or chaffing when using the pack in all our trips.

The panniers are free hanging from the pack, the buckles from the straps are located underneath the pocket. The buckles don't rub the dog since there is padding underneath of them.

The Approach pack has a 3 point harness which goes across your pooch's chest.

The pack has a large handle on the back, which is great for when you need to grab them on the trail.

Then there is a nice solid alloy spot to attach your leash. And I use that to hang the pack along with my food to keep bears at bay.

He has no problems with the pack. He slows down for maybe the first 2 minutes wearing the pack, then he is back to normal.

You know what a day of backpacking does for a dog? Makes them tired...

So you are going to sleep there?

Now when you are packing your dog pack, Ruff Wear says it should not exceed 25-30% of your dog's weight. I don't pack it anywhere near that, but just keep it in mind.

It is made of the right materials that resist ripping when your dog inevitably brushes it against rocks and trees and god knows what else on the trail. Having used this pack for the last few years, Zeus has never gotten a "hot spot" or shown any signs of discomfort in it. So if you need a dog pack, look no further.

Helmet Mount for Blackburn Flea USB

I have been getting a few questions about the helmet mount I use for the Blackburn Flea USB light. It is a great light for commuting, but you just can't mount it to a helmet and aim it where you want with the simple mount it uses. It is really nice to be able to point the flashing Flea at drivers and having it on your helmet enables that.

I use the Light and Motion Helmet adapter. It uses a velcro strap and a plastic adapter base which can mount to your helmet vertically or horizontally.

So if you are looking for something to mount you Blackburn USB Flea on your helmet, pick this up.

Review: Mammut TR1 Ambilight - Updated

I have had this Mammut TR1 Ambilight for 6 months now and I wanted to post a new review.

The Mammut TR1 Headlamp is a feature packed lightweight(72g) headlamp. With the headlamp set on high it will run 25 hours and an amazing 60 hours on low. The light head swivels so you can point it where it is needed most, which is really handy when reading in your tent or fiddling about in the dark with your camp stove or what not.

The Mammut TR1 has 3 modes, high, low and blink. The low mode is so bright I often forgot to put it on high.

The light has 4 LEDs, but somehow they are perfectly focused to make a perfect round circle of light.

One really cool feature is the little lever next to the light, it is a lock to keep from accidentally turning the light on and burning your batteries up while in your pack.

What is really neat about this light, is the Ambilight, which is a plastic diffuser and reflector that fits over the light for use as a lantern.

And hanging it from the tent it provides a nice light in the tent.

And it is a really nice light to read by with the Ambilight attachment on.

Review: Osprey Hornet 46 Backpack

I first went backpacking in 1990, back then if you wanted to be a real backpacker you got a humongous Lowe Alpine teal and purple backpack. And pretty much people keep using them today. I love heading out in the back country and staying under stars. But I have a job and on top of that go to grad school. So I rarely if ever go out for more than one night. Yet I still carried a huge pack with a ton of gear in it.

Enter the Osprey Hornet 46, which literally changed the game for me. It is an ultra light backpack that has 46 liters of capacity and tons of small well thought out features.

The bag is made of lightweight ripstop material, with lightweight straps and tons of compression points. It has mesh shoulder straps with large cutouts in the foam for lighter weight and increased breathability.

The shoulder straps also have elastic pouches integrated for holding snacks. They fit Clif Shots perfectly.

The shoulder straps also have an adjustable sternum strap, with a built in whistle which is a nice little touch The shoulder straps have elastic straps for guiding your hydration hose, and the pack has a large opening in the back for a reservoir. I used a 3L bladder with no problems.

The top pocket of the pack is removable, and features a top zippered pocket.

And the underside of the same top flap/pocket is another zippered pocket.

The pack has one large central pocket. which has a cordlock closure and compression strap.

You can see on the front of the pack, there is a large mesh pocket with easy access for things like hats, gloves and power bars.

The pack has large stretchy pockets running the full length on the sides of the pack.The pockets also have webbing to compress the pack as a whole, and to keep you gear from moving around in the pockets.

A neat feature on the pockets: half way down there is an access cutout, which is just so nice for grabbing that thing you jammed down in the bottom before you left.

The waist strap is a big departure from the backpacks of old. My old backpacking pack had a 6" tall 2" thick foam belt with a 2" webbing buckle. The Osprey Hornet 46 has a small 1" strap with mesh pockets on the side.

You know what? It was as comfortable if more so than my old pack.

This pack made me rethink what I carried on a trip, it easily fit everything I needed for a one night overnight. I left some extra stuff at home because of the smaller (2760 i^3) capacity of the pack.

Every thing possible has been thought out with this pack. There is nothing at all I would change about it,

You want to question how a pack so light, with small straps could compare to the pack you have in your basement and have used for years. It is actually more comfortable than any other backpacking pack I have used. So if you need a pack for a one or two night overnight, check out the Osprey Hornet 46, you won't be disappointed.

Review: Kenda Small Block 8

I just started riding the Kenda Small Block 8 tires on my Cannondale and they are really nice fast tires. I have ridden Kenda Nevegals and Slant 6 tires for years now and and really liked those so I was psyched these came on my new 29er. The Small Block Eight is Kenda's XC race tire, it is light and rolls super fast. On dry trails these tires are the jam.

The tire has closely spaced low profile lugs. In fact I would love to try the cross version of these.

The tire has a nice round profile with no large side lugs, which makes for great cornering in the dry dusty conditions.

This is great tire to ride in the summer and when the tires are mostly dry. You can handle some mud in them too, but if the trails are really sloppy you'll have to just keep you eyes on the trail, you can ride wet rocks and roots, but you need to use some finesse. This would be a perfect tire for an IMBA made trail, like those at Raystown Lake.

Ok call me smitten, the Turner is currently resting in the basement while I am putting in miles on my new single speed, the Cannondale Trail SL 29 3 . As I mentioned in my last post, while I can turn the pedals just fine with the stock 33/20 gearing I don't think its the best for my knees.

I picked up a Niner 21T cog and a Salsa 32T Chainring to make climbing easier. Oh man the hills are much more fun now. I might go back to the 20T in the rear after a month or so and my legs adjust to the SS. But for now the new easier gearing is nice!

Also there has got to be a better tool than this lockring wrench. I mean no one makes a large socket-style-tool to fit over the lockring?

Cannondale Trail SL 29 3 Single Speed

All my friends have bought single speed 29er rigid bikes. I have to say, I felt left out. But at the same time I can't rationalize buying a "blinglespeed". So to that end I picked up a Cannondale Trail SL 29 3 Single Speed. What I liked about it was that it used the same lightweight aluminum frame as a few of the higher end Cannondales, but comes with more... ahem ... meager parts. That low entry price for SS is why I purchased the dale', if everything works out I can just upgrade this bike.

I have had two previously failed attempts at going SS, but they were both Single Speed Cyclocross bikes, and a SS mountain bike is totally different. It is way more fun. I will need to switch out the gearing though, its 33x20, I'm going to go 32x21, at least until I get stronger.

I'm kicking it 90s NORBA style with some old bar ends up front.

My first impressions of the 29er wheel are pretty good. The hype about rolling over roots and rocks is pretty well deserved. And the Kenda Small block 8s are great tires so far.

I am pretty amazed with how nice this bike rides. I don't think I am ready to sell my Turner and join the cult of "one-gear-more-beer", which doesn't work since I don't drink anyhow...

I'd love to try out front suspension fork. Anyhow expect a full review later, it is fun to ride for now!

Best dog bowl for hiking.

We always take our dog with us on hikes, and pretty much everywhere to be honest. We have tried a ton of different dog bowls, packable dog bowls, tupper ware, etc and none of them worked well.

But we saw this Sea-to-Summit X-Bowl and it looked perfect.While it is not made for dogs, but for people - our lab doesn't seem to mind. We have been using it for the past few months and it is pretty much perfect.

It basically has two key features, it folds almost totally flat.

And because of the rubber construction, it does not absorb any water, which is where all the other folding nylon dog specific bowls fail. They end up getting your bag all wet when you are done feeding your pooch.

Review: Ultrapod Compact Tripod

I have been getting a lot of questions lately about what kind of camera gear I use for the pics on robonza. I use a Canon S95 and most importantly an Ultrapod 1 Tripod. The reason I like the Ultrapod is that it is so compact, lightweight, well made and also incredibly stable.

It folds up in to a small pocketable size.

As the name suggests it has 3 folding legs, each with rubber tips that keep it form sliding on odd surfaces, like a tree stump... And with its unique triangular shape coupled with its velcro strap you can attach it to a tree for photos.

The Ultrapod will attach to any camera with a threaded tripod mount, and the camera never slips around because the mounting plate is covered with cork.

I have been carrying this in my backpack every hike or bike ride for the last 10 years and it has not worn out. If I am reviewing bike parts and stopping to take a lot of pictures, I'll even attach it to my stem for quick access.

And it lets me take cool pictures like these:

My camera is a Canon S95, which is very nice because the self timer is adjustable up to 30 seconds with multiple pictures.

I would definitely get this over any of the other compact tripod out there.

The Ortlieb Ultimate5 Classic handlebar bag from Ortlieb is a really well made piece of gear. The bag is waterproof like all Ortlieb gear, but what is really the most impressive thing about this is bag is the attachment mechanism. It is rock solid, the bag never bounces around at all.

It attaches with a large plastic block.

The block clips your bag in to place, and can even lock on. It is cool that they include the lock and keys with the bag, not a separate upgrade. (Why do roof racks not come with keys? Really who is not going to lock their bike? )

The mount attaches with a braided steal cord, which just does not seem like it would work, but oh it does...

The box is kind of like a large lunch pale, the top attaches with snaps.

It has a large main pocket and a zippered pouch. It can easily fit a jacket and what not for heading out and about on your bike.

The bag also has an included removable shoulder strap for carrying it when off the bike. It attaches to these nubs on the side.

Ortlieb has a ton of accessories for this bag like a map holder , GPS holder and a SLR camera insert.

Anyhow I have used it for going around town and for riding on the beach, it is perfect for carrying a few things when you don't want a backpack. It is also really nice for holding things you'd want while riding, as it is easy to open and close while riding.

Review: Tubus Rack Mounting Solutions

I have a Seven Mudhoney Ti Cyclocross frame with disc brakes, which I think is a great bike. I have used it as a CX race bike, commuter, road and touring bike. The only problem with this frame is trying to fit a rack on it.

The rack eyelets are above the disc caliper. Which puts a rack really high above the wheel and way too far forward. Now I only go bike camping once a year, so buying a new bike to address this not really a good solution.

So I went looking for a solution to fit a rack on my bike. Tubus makes an adapter kit for mounting a rack on the rear skewer which looked like it would work.

The kit includes a longer rear skewer, an assortment of spacers and a set of nuts and bolts.

On the drive side it worked fine.

On the non drive side, aka the disc caliper side I used the Jandd Disc Brake adapter kit to move the rack arm out further from the dropout.

You can see why I need it clearly in this picture.

Now the Seven Mudhoney has a brake bridge with a single spot for attaching a fender or rack, but I wanted to use two rack struts to hold my tent and camping gear. So I used the Tubus Clampset. which really to be frank is a high end version of a p-clamp. But it is much more secure and it works perfectly. They come in a variety of sizes. So measure your seat stay before you order them.

I bought them online from Wayne @ the touring store, and he warned me that this setup would probably not work. But I lucked out and it worked fine. I have used these with a Jandd Expedition Rack and Jannd Mountain Panniers for commuting and bike touring.

Review: Jandd Pannier Rain Covers

I have a set of Jandd Mountain Panniers, which are I think are great. It has been raining a ton out here this year and I have been using Jannd Rain Covers to keep my gear dry.

They are large enough to cover all of the Mountain Pannier, even if you have stuffed it full of groceries or camping gear.

The Rain Cover is super bright yellow with reflective trim.

This is a view of the back of the Jannd Mountain Pannier, a small amount of the pannier is exposed to the elements. That part of the bag can get damp in a deluge, but nothing inside the bag has ever gotten wet. There is a drain hole in the bottom of the cover to let any water that gets in- get out.

The pack covers feature fully taped seams.

The rain cover packs down small, about the size of your fist.

Review: Jandd Mountain Panniers

As you might know from reading this blog, I am a fan of Jandd gear. So when I needed some new panniers and I picked up a pair of Jandd Mountain Panniers. What first caught my eye was that they were taller rather than wider, which helps with heel clearance on bikes with short chainstays like CX bikes or mountain bikes. My Ti Seven Mudhoney Cyclocross bike has very short chain stays and the Jandd Mountain Panniers worked perfectly mounted on the Jandd Expedition Rack.

They have one main large compartment.

And the main pocket has a 10" telescoping storm sleeve.

The sleeve has two sets of draw cords to keep your gear secure.

Jandd doesn't forget any details. The panniers have two sets of compression straps on the sides, which can also be used to attach a Jandd Accessory Pocket, if you need some more room.

The top flap compresses the bag vertically. The flap has bungee cords to attach a jacket or other things.

The top flap has a pocket for storing things you need quick access to, like a wallet and phone. I keep the Jandd Rain Covers in there as well.

You can expand the storage capacity by unzipping the top flap and adjusting the straps underneath the flap.

They attach easily and securing with hooks for the top of the rack.

And on the bottom of the pannier they attach with a hook and easy to use adjuster.

A really important feature of any pannier if used for commuting is what size laptop it can hold. The Jandd Mountain Pannier can fit easily fit a 15" or 13" Macbook pro.

And I have used them to go touring. They held everything I needed and with the Jandd Rain Covers everything stayed dry in the pouring rain.

Bottom Line
I have owned other panniers from Lone Peak, Ortlieb, REI and Nashbar. By far the nicest I have owned are these Jandd Mountain Panniers. The construction is super solid, the attachment points and compression straps are done really well. If you need a set of Panniers for bike touring or commuting definitely pick these up.

The Bridge is Over

A weekend of awesome riding has just wrapped up. We have had a lot of rain lately, but Saturday was the second day in a row of no rain, so why go for a ride?

In the last two weeks the vegetation around the trails has REALLY grown in full and thorny...

As always a Ohiopyle is a blast to ride.

I however ran in to a bit of a problem at the trail over Jonathon Run.

They must have had some torrential rain to break this bridge.

I rode upstream and crossed at a wide spot. The creek got about 2 feet deep at one spot. But what is crazy is that the creek has no dirt in it, it is just smooth slippery rock.

Anyhow it was great riding. I was beat!

But the weekend was not over, the forecast called for rain and thunderstorms. So I figured not a bad day for a CX ride on the rail trail. It dumped on the drive down.

But then the sun broke through.

And the monotony of the rail trail got to me. I decided to try a route I scoped out on the map a while ago. I started climbing a dirt road.

It kicked a few times.

And the higher I climbed, the worse the road got.

It got better right before the summit.

Cool Tool: Pedro's Vise Whip

Sometimes tools are cool, and this definitely is. When removing your cassette, you usually use a "chain whip", which is a piece of chain that wraps around the cassette and then slips off when you put weight on it...

Pedro's built a much better mouse trap with the Pedro's Vise Whip. It is so much better than a chain whip. Think of it as a modified pair of Vise Grips that have notches in the jaws to fit on the teeth of your cassette.

Like a pair of Vise Grips, they lock in place on the cassette, with an adjustment bolt on the handle to fit 11-23T cogs.

You can lower the lock nut to keep the width of the jaws adjusted for your wheel.

The Pedro's Vise Whip locks on to the cassette something fierce. It is not coming off.

These are more expensive than a chain whip, but they are so worth it.

Riding French Creek State Park

I was visiting my Folks in Eastern PA and of course brought a mountain bike to ride at some of the places I rode in my formative years.

French creek is about an hour from Philly and has some amazing trails. Miles and miles of amazing singletrack.

There are some nice long climbs, smooth fast trails and tough rock gardens.

Add this to your list if you are in the area.

We have had a crazy wet spring. I got in a great mountain bike ride in Ohiopyle, PA.

And now that is getting warm, I am planning a bike packing trip in the next few weeks.

And a short backpacking trip is in the works, I have a new Osprey Hornet 46 ready to hit the trail...

Anyway it might not stop raining, but at least it is getting a bit warmer!

Review: Outdoor Research Ferrosi 3/4 Pants

Since I admitted to myself that I love knickers, ok lets call a spade a spade- capri's, I have been on the hunt for the best pair. Well I found them. The Outdoor Research Ferossi 3/4 Pants are a fine pair of manpri's for riding or hiking.

They have two side pockets and a hip pocket.

Plus two rear zippered pockets.

On the bike they reach just a few inches below the knee.

Off the bike they are about mid calf.

They are made of really light weight fabric that breaths incredibly well. On this ride it started in the 50s, then went up to 70°F and went back down when the sun set. These are great, I got back to the car and the OR Ferrosi 3/4 pants were totally dry. Another really nice feature is that they have belt loops.

Bottom Line:
I really like these, I tried some other capris/manpris/shpants/clam diggers/knickers before but these are by far the best I have worn. They are from OR, so you know they are a great quality. So my search is over for the perfect knickers.

Review: Outdoor Research Foray Jacket and Pants

This winter and spring has been wet, really wet. I have been wearing the Outdoor Research Foray Jacket and Pants way more than I thought! They are made from Goretex Paclite, which is one of the best shell materials. Paclite does not require a liner, but don't let "lite" in the Paclite scare you, it is as tough as any hard shell jacket. I used a pair of Paclite pants for mountaineering, hiking and commuting for a decade before I finally wore them out, which was really only because of too much glissading on snow climbs like this.

Which is why when it came time for a new shell and pants I looked for gear made out of Paclite. I have been a big fan of OR for years so I was psyched to that they made the Foray Jacket and Pants out of Paclite.

I wanted a burlier coat than my Marmot Precip, which is nice, but in a down pour the Marmot is only good for 30 minutes. I have worn these Outdoor Research Foray pieces in the rain on all day hikes where it just dumped and water has not been able to get through.

This pic below is after 2.5 hours in pouring rain. The water is still beading up on the sleeves.

The coat has pit zips that go all the way from the elbow to the waist, which makes temperature regulation a snap. This is great for those days when it is still too cold to go without a jacket but you don't want to be sweating more than you are getting rained on.

The pants have a zipper that runs from just below the waist down to the ankle.

With the side zippers the pants are easy to put on over shoes or boots.

The jacket has a napoleon pocket, and two front pockets.

The pocket is actually quite deep, as you can see from the inside photo.

There is another larger internal pocket on the other side.

The cuffs have velcro, and a nice touch is the sticky rubber on the velcro tab so you can make adjustments with wet hands or gloves.

The hood provides plenty of coverage, and has adjustment cords on the front.

Bottom Line:
I really like these Outdoor Research Foray Jacket and Pants. The details are spot on and Paclite lasts for a very long time, If you live in a wet area and do active outdoor stuff, these are great.They pac down very small too, a nice bonus of the Paclite material.

It has been raining a ton. But the forecast showed a small window of no rain. I had to go for it.

I planned on staying on the GAP trail, but the singletrack called my name, and it worked out in the end.

Review: Platypus Origin 22 Backpack

The Platypus Origin 22 is a really unique backpack. It is a 22 liter day pack with plenty of internal storage, external pockets and a built in Platypus reservoir pocket. It has more bells and whistles than an iPod, literally it has a whistle.

This bag has quickly become one of my favorite bags, it is so convenient for hiking. You easily carry just a shell and some food, or you could stuff it full of gear all in the same bag. The ability to stash the gear you use often on the outside and the ton of pockets make it great.

At 22 liters(1342 in^3) it is a perfect for a long day hike, or even a super-light overnight.

The pack is made of waterproof coated fabrics with waterproof zippers.

The pack has two main pockets, one for your gear and one for the hydration bladder.

The large main pocket can hold a ton of gear. And there is an internal mesh pocket for your wallet, phone, etc and a key hook.

This pack comes with a nice 2 liter Platypus bladder. It will fit up to a 3L bladder. The Platypus bladder has a zip lock closure at the top plastic slide that goes over it to keep it tight.

The bladder attaches to the pack with two toggles that fit through holes in the bladder.

One more thing about the bladder, it has an on/off position on the bite valve. This is really handy in preventing the all to common scenario: driving to the trail, you get there and everything in the trunk is wet from a leaky bite valve.

In the above pic you can see how the bite valve attaches to a holder on the sternum strap. The sternum strap is easily adjustable with two slides on the shoulder straps.

When I said earlier that there was a whistle, I really meant it, there is a whistle in one of the shoulder straps. It is a really ingenious feature. It tucks away in to the shoulder strap.

The shoulder straps, actually all the straps have sewn in loops to keep the excess strap from flapping around.

You can route the Platypus hose through the top or the bottom of the bag.

Another cool feature of the pack is on the waist belt, the sides have pockets. I keep my camera in one and dog treats in the other.

The pack also has one of my favorite features on a day pack, side pockets for water bottles. Even though it has a platypus bladder, I carry water for my dog.

Also the bag has an outer compression pocket that is made of the same stretchy material as the side pockets and the shoulder straps and back panel. I have used the outer pocket for holding a bowl for my dog, or stashing my gloves and hat on cold hikes where you'll need to grab them often. The bag has an ice axe loop which can be removed to put a blinky light on.

The bag has a padded back, with a channel to keep pressure/weight off of your spine. It is really comfortable.

Bottom Line:
I really like this pack, it really has nothing wrong with it. I love all of the outside pockets and that it is really waterproof. The bag is just as comfortable crammed full of gear as almost empty. With the side pockets in the belt, and the outer pockets for water bottles and everything else Platypus could embroider a dog paw and market this as a Dog Hiking Pack! I keep treats in the side pockets, and his bowl and water in the outer pockets.

It is a really nice pack that I would recommend to anyone that needs a quality day pack.

Review: Asolo Stynger GTX Boots

I recently bought a pair of Asolo Stynger GTX boots for hiking and backpacking and so far they are fantastic! I bought a pair of gortex REI brand boots about four years ago and they have served me pretty well for the small amount of money I paid for them. I thought I really liked my REI boots until I started wearing my new Asolo's. There has been pretty much no break in period at all, they felt great the first time I put them on and still feel awesome a couple months later.

Here they are on my hike this weekend with Joe and Zeus:)

The plastic toe cap may be my favorite feature of these boots. After watching Joe stomp around in creeks and rivers in his Montrail boots for the last 12 years I knew there must be something to this awesome toe cap.

They are gortex so I've been putting them to good use and my feet have stayed completely dry.

Here is a view of the lacing system which is very nice, not too complicated, they're easy to get on and off.

The bottom line is I'm extremely psyched on these boots. They are very comfortable almost having the comfort and lightness of a regular trail running shoe but yet do not sacrifice the burliness and support of a hiking boot. I can't wait for my next backpacking adventure with Joe and Zeus!:)

Review: Suunto Core Watch

This is a guest post by my buddy Aaron, a fellow computer security nerd a super fast bike racer.

I was about to buy a Suunto Core watch, when Joe mentioned that he had this Suunto Core all Black watch to review. So I took him up on the offer to try it before I buy it. Now the hardest part is returning it.

The all black watch is pretty stylish. While I wouldn't wear it with a suit, it's sharp looks fit in at casual places. At first I thought the large face wouldn't work well with my small wrists, but it quickly grows on you. I was even able to rock climb without much issue.

The compass was useful for re-orienting ourselves with maps and landmarks, but my favorite feature was the altimeter. It may not be accurate enough for skydiving, but for a mountain biker obsessed with how far we've descended or how much higher we need to climb it perfectly fits the bill.

Review Mammut TR1 Ambient Light Set Headlamp

The Mammut TR1 Headlamp is a feature packed lightweight(72g) headlamp. With the headlamp set on high it will run 25 hours and an amazing 60 hours on low. The light head swivels so you can point it where it is needed most. Don't worry though it stays in place while trail running. The Mammut TR1 has 3 modes, high, low and blink. The low mode is so bright I often forgot to put it on high.

Note the little lever next to the light, it is a lock to keep from accidentally turning the light on and burning your batteries up while in your pack.

What is really neat about this light, is the Ambilight, which is a plastic diffuser and reflector that fit over the light for use in tent as a lantern.

It snaps over the front of the light, easy on, easy off.

The diffuser makes reading books in your tent really nice. The Mammut TR1 Ambilight is nice and light, while still being very bight.

Dry Trails

This weekend was fantastic for going outside. The trails were dry, and totally empty. I rode at Ohiopyle State Park, ran and hiked again at O'Pyle all in one weekend. The spring is here... Its not warm yet, but its getting there.
